We are not frightened anymore,
We stood up,
We stood upAnd there are two of us there will be more,
They’ll show up,
Yeah they’ll show up
They’ll show upBlame a change of mind
A seismic shift in times
They told us not to fight
But we’ll fight it till we dieCause we are not frightened anymore,
We stood up,
We stood upAnd there are two of us there will be many more
They’ll show up,
Yeah they’ll show upAnd so they sunk every ship we sailed
But we stood up
We stood up and they fought hard
But somewhere fighting failedThey’re all shook up,
They’re all shook upAll shook up steel and concrete break
Beneath the steady waves
Of fearless hope and grace
In kindness there is strength.‘Cause we are not frightened anymore
We stood up
We stood upAnd there are two of us there will be many more
They’ll show up
Yeah they’ll show up
I watched In Time last night for the first time. I think it’s an amazing film. It managed to push through at the box office but It’s a shame it didn’t do better. Justin Timberlake is truly coming into his own as an actor. Amanda Seyfried still maintains that mystical sense about herself with those big doe eyes. Andrew Niccol’s multi-layered commentary about current society through the veil of a dystopian future is remarkable and the Robin Hood-esque quality of the Time Bank robberies is a unique adaptation of an age old story. One of the features I found most amusing about the film was it’s incorporation of some of our most familiar time-based idioms—Justin Timberlake lamenting: “I wish I had more time on my hands”, was one of my particular favorites.
Throughout the movie I couldn’t get this song by A Fine Frenzy out my head. The revolutionary stance Will (Timberlake) and Sylvia (Seyfried) take by the end of the film is definitely highlighted by the song Stood Up. If In Time hadn’t focused on such a futuristic cinematic score, Stood Up might have fit right in as a musical cue (I’ll admit, the songs musical breakdown in the b-section is a perfect fit as is).
Taken as a whole, it definitely has left me inspired and motivated as I start another work week. Fighting for social justice might be an uphill battle—the powers that be clearly have too much to lose in the demolition of the status quo—but I couldn’t imagine spending my time any other way.
I recommend everyone check out the film—and the song.
